Setting 2019 Goals Like a Rockstar

The most important part of any goal is the PLAN. There is a wise saying

“Most people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan. “John J Buckley”

If you really want to see your dreams become a reality, put together a plan.

When I started my business 5 years ago, the first thing I did was to make out a plan. Not just any ole plan. It was specific. It was so detailed I knew what was going to happen at the end of each week, so that if there was any adjustments in my timeline, we could make it as soon as possible.

There are plenty of goals out there. Here are a few to consider as you read on.

  • Expand professional knowledge and training. …
  • Improve work performance. …
  • Strengthen professional relationships. …
  • Better presentation skills. …
  • Increase earnings. …
  • Attain a higher job role. …
  • Gain new experiences. …
  • To work for a dream company.

S- Specific. There is nothing more inspiring than to know exactly what you are shooting for. If you say to yourself, I hope to be rich someday, this just isn’t specific enough to be actionable. You’ll need to put details on your goal. Now if you say, “I am going to be a millionaire by the time I am 30” this is more actionable. It tells your mind an age and a reference point to know when the goal is met.

M- Measurable How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal? This is why we say your goal must be measurable. Let’s go back to our example, “I want to be rich…” Unless we put a measurable standard on this goal it becomes hard to know if we have accomplished what we’ve set out to do. Let’s rephrase our goal to include “I want to be a millionaire…” Just by adding the “millionaire” description, we’ve given ourselves a measurable standard to see.

A- Achievable Many people have lofty goals. Some of them are more than just lofty, they are nearly impossible to achieve. The next on our list of elements of goal-setting, make your goal Achievable. As someone on a success journey you should always push yourself to higher heights. You should never think that anything is impossible for you to do but be realistic in your goals. Saying that you will become a millionaire in a week or that you will be able to run a marathon without training is being unrealistic.  Make your goals things that are achievable to someone who actually applies themselves.

R- Relevant- Let’s face it. If your goal doesn’t mean something to you, it probably won’t keep you up at night. Your goal must be relevant to you and your lifestyle. We call this the Big WHY. Why are you doing whatever you are doing? Is it important. This will be the most important aspect of goal-setting. Many people say that if it were not for their WHY they would have quit their pursuit long ago. Make you goal relevant and you will go a long way in having a goal that is successful.

T- Time-based- In our first example we said that our goal to become a millionaire would come at a date specific. This is key. A specific date tells your subconscious, “I have until this date to get things done.” Don’t give yourself an open-ended goal. This tells your mind, “He doesn’t really mean it. If he did, he would have put a date on getting the job done.”

2019 might be the greatest year of your life. It most certainly be great if you plan to succeed. If you follow our SMART Planning Guide, you’ll certainly succeed  because you have planned to succeed.
